What is a Third Culture Kid - a TCK?

“A third culture kid is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parent’s culture.

The third culture kid builds relationships to all the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the third culture kid’s life experience the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of the same background, other TCK’s.

This inspirational talk focuses on how to ease the challenges for children living an internationally mobile life by looking at the following key issues:

  • How does a child form identity?
  • What influences the formation of identity?
  • Where are you from?

Emotional issues:

  • Unresolved grief due to relocation
  • Restlessness during adult life
  • Ignorance of “home” culture

  • Challenges of meeting the KNOWN
  • Meeting expectations of “passport country”
